Baking Up a Stronger Workplace: How One Employee’s Cakes Inspire Connection

Every month, employees on the second floor of the NMC Health Surgery Center celebrate birthdays and special events together. And they’re always treated to something special—a homemade, custom-designed cake crafted with care by one of our very own. But beyond the delicious flavors, this tradition has become a symbol of generosity, teamwork, and a positive workplace culture.

Kerry, medical assistant, grew up in a military family and experienced a world of flavors from different cultures. Her love for food, especially sweets, sparked an interest in baking. What started as a personal hobby turned into a way to bring people together, strengthening bonds, and fostering camaraderie at work.

For her, baking is more than just mixing ingredients—it’s about connection and bringing joy to her coworkers. “There’s something magical about seeing someone’s face light up when they taste something delicious,” she says. “There is something so wonderful about making others happy visually and through taste.”

Before she even starts gathering ingredients, she asks her co-workers for ideas or themes.

When Dr. Ann Hutchison of NMC Health Surgical Specialists was preparing to celebrate her birthday, she told Kerry she loved red velvet cake, cows and quilts. Without a photo to base her design from, Kerry spent seven hours lovingly creating a Highland cow and an intricate quilt pattern out of fondant. The result? The cutest cake you ever saw! And Dr. Hutchison’s reaction? Priceless.

One of Kerry’s proudest baking moments came when Dr. Marc O. Duverseau, also of NMC Health Surgical Specialists, requested a Black Forest gateau for his birthday—something she had never made before. After researching and carefully following the recipe, she was amazed by how rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced the cake turned out. The experience reinforced the idea that stepping outside one’s comfort zone can lead to incredible results.

Baking has taught her valuable lessons about generosity and community. While cakes can be expensive to make, she sees it as a way to give back.

More than just about cakes, Kerry hopes her efforts inspire others. “I want my baking to encourage my coworkers to step out of their comfort zones and create something special, too” she says. Kerry knows her cakes are more than just food – they’re about generosity and making the workplace a little brighter.

For anyone unsure about sharing their talents, she offers this advice: “If you’re scared, unsure, or insecure, face those giants and just do it!”

One thing is certain—NMC Health is much sweeter, warmer, and more connected thanks to Kerry and her kind heart!
