Get to know Dr. Roth:

Why are you excited to join NMC Health?

Hesston is such an amazing community and has always been the place I have called home. It is truly a privilege to have the opportunity to return here to serve the community and something that I am so excited about. Hesston was a special place to grow up, and I can’t wait to raise my children here as well. As I have been able to rotate in the clinic and get to know the system better, I am continually seeing that NMC Health is also a special community, and I’m excited to join the NMC Health team.

Why did you choose to have a career in healthcare?

Working at Schowalter Villa in high school sparked my interest in a future career in healthcare. As a housekeeper, I watched the healthcare staff who offered so much help and support to the residents every day. Being able to help and serve others during some of their most vulnerable and challenging times is so rewarding. It is also a privilege to have the trust of patients during some of their toughest times.

What is your specialty, and why did you choose it?

I chose family medicine for many reasons, with the largest being the relationships that you get to have with patients. You are often there for the good times and the bad. There aren’t many areas of medicine that you can care for someone for decades, but also get to take care of their spouse, children, and grandchildren. The wide variety of medicine and ages is also so fun. I love that I can see a newborn and a ninety-year-old within the same hour.

What inspires you to do what you do every day?

There are many things that inspire me each day, but one of the biggest is feeling led to serve others through medicine. My patients also inspire me each day. There are so many tough times that they face, and seeing their resilience motivates me to give them the best I have.

What is your favorite thing about working with patients?

I love getting to know people outside of just their medical problems. Hearing about their family, hobbies, goals, and so many other things is something that I both enjoy, but also builds our relationship. Knowing what drives people is something that can help you walk with them through their challenging moments.

What is your top priority when providing healthcare?

My top priority is helping people work towards living their happiest and healthiest life, whatever that may look like. Everyone has different priorities and goals so I try my best to help them achieve those through the medical care I provide.

What are your favorite things to do outside of the office?

I enjoy running, triathlons, board games, watching sports, hanging out with my family, and chasing around and playing with my two-year-old daughter.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in healthcare, what would it be?

A career in healthcare is so rewarding and fulfilling. While it can be extremely challenging with some tough times, the moments that you can truly make a difference in someone’s life make all the tough times worth it.

What’s the best advice you received?

Growing up, my dad would tell us before every sporting event, “Have fun, do your best, and take it all in.” This is something that has stuck with me through the years as it applies to many things in life. I always try to work my hardest in all that I do, but it’s a good reminder that sometimes the most important thing is to enjoy and savor the moments along the way.

What’s one thing you wish every patient knew?

Medicine isn’t always as straightforward as we would like. There are times that we try something and it doesn’t work or the tests we run don’t give us any answers. I can’t imagine how frustrating this is when people are suffering. I hope my patients will have patience as we work through those times together and know that I will do my very best to find the answers and get them the best treatment possible.
