Advanced Biologic Dressings

NMC Health Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center uses advanced biologic dressings in the healing of wounds. Biologic dressings have been shown to achieve higher rate of wound closure in difficult-to-treat wounds compared to other treatments.

The types of dressings used at NMC Health are naturally derived from human tissue. The primary function of these living cell dressings is to give the structural support to new cell growth. The also change a wound’s microenvironment, by stimulating cell growth and inhibiting scar formation.

Wounds treated with biologic dressings include:

  • Burns
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Pyoderma ganrenosum
  • Surgical dehiscence
  • Venous leg ulcers

In addition, all of our providers are specially trained to use advanced biologic dressings.

Lack of blood flowing to the wound or a missignaling to your body’s natural healing process can sometimes cause wounds to be harder to heal. Other wounds can become infected, which make them more difficult to heal. Sometimes, poor general nutrition can affect wound healing. The majority of chronic wounds are easy to prevent. If you live with diabetes, be sure you are wearing shoes that fit to prevent sores from appearing on your feet. Check your feet daily so issues are recognized early.

For those who might be bedridden or unable to move much, be sure to change positions often so pressure sores don’t develop on the hips, heels or other areas of the body.

The best way to prevent wound healing issues is to have a healthy diet, get enough exercise and avoid smoking.
