This past July, Olivia, a registered nurse on NMC’s surgical unit, traveled with a team of 15 to the island of Haiti. Based at the Centre Children International Lifeline Orphanage in Dargout, Olivia and her team traveled to various churches to hold Vacation Bible School (VBS) and serve a dinner of rice and beans to the local children. The team brought enough supplies and items to fill bags for 1,500 kids. Filled with rice, beans, hygiene products and a Bible, these bags were handed out at the conclusion of VBS and not a single bag went unused. If they weren’t at VBS, the team spent their time at the orphanage where they had bible studies, played soccer, organized a balloon fight, learned Haitian Creole, taught English, cooked meals, sang and prayed.
When you ask Olivia what impacted her most, she talks about the people she encountered and spiritual connections she made with them. “Those who were under-served, overlooked and had close to nothing still showed an immense amount of love, hope and connection with God,” said Olivia. “This was amazing to me. I came back from this trip fulfilled and blessed to serve Lifeline, and I am forever changed.”
