Newton Medical Center (NMC) announced today that the Sandra Qamar Scholarship Fund has reached the $100,000 mark.
“This is a wonderful milestone in its own right,” said Val Gleason, president and chief executive officer. “But what’s even more exciting, is that, from this point forward, the Sandra Qamar Scholarship Fund will stand on its own to support nursing scholars.”
The fund honors longtime NMC nurse leader, Sandra Qamar, and it provides scholarships to NMC registered nurses pursuing higher degrees in nursing or nursing-related fields. Selected applicants demonstrate an outstanding capacity for nursing practice and leadership, have a record of high achievement and have mature and clearly defined career interests with evidence of potential for professional accomplishments.
This year’s recipients include Sarah Blosser, Shelly Hardman, John Miller and Janie Mosqueda. Blosser currently serves as the nurse manager for the Inpatient Rehabilitation and Generations units, and is pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing degree through Maryville University, specializing in psychiatric mental health. Hardman, who currently works as a clinical analyst and in the Maternal Child unit, is working towards her Master of Science in Nursing degree, also through Maryville University, specializing in family health. Miller, who works in the Medical unit, and Mosqueda, NMC’s employee health specialist, are both working towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Hesston College.
“We’re extremely proud of this year’s recipients,” said Heather Porter, chief clinical officer. “These four nurses are exceptionally passionate about helping their patients and fellow nurses; and in furthering their education, they will gain the ability to make a greater impact in our health care community.”
